Contexualizing GBV Prevention and Response

Gender-based violence (GBV) remains a significant global issue; one in three women worldwide experience physical or sexual violence, primarily at the hands of an intimate partner. Despite the existence of global standards and guidelines for GBV prevention and response and rhetorical prioritization across governments and humanitarian agencies, this statistic underscores the ongoing challenges in addressing this pervasive issue. In humanitarian crises, the risk of GBV increases astronomically. With humanitarian crises increasing in intensity, frequency and longevity, continued and enhanced efforts to prevent and respond to GBV are needed. The report offers several recommendations to address these challenges. Some of them—such as increasing
direct and flexible funding to WLOs and WROs and improving coordination and collaboration—have long been made as ways to achieve localization goals, increase GBV prioritization across the sector, achieve gender equality goals and de-colonize humanitarian aid.
